Psychological Therapies: Counselling

Counselling is a talking therapy tending to focus on more immediate external difficulties and problem solving. According to the problems presented, counselling can be short or longer term with some counsellors working at depth akin to psychotherapy. Trainings vary in length, academic depth and clinical experience.

Counselling is currently voluntarily regulated, however professional membership of organisations such as the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and the Confederation of Scottish Counselling Agencies (COSCA) require particular professional and ethical standards.
