Psychological Therapies: Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a talking therapy aiming to influence deeper layers of the personality at the source of troubling thoughts and behaviours. It tends to be longer term.

Trainings are generally to Masters or Doctorate level, many involving academic study and clinical practice, often with a speciality in mental health.

Psychoanalytic psychotherapists are normally registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). Other psychotherapists are generally registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) or the British Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP) and overseen by the Professional Standards Agency (PSA).
